What Are Maglocks and Why They Matter for Security

Maglocks are locking mechanisms that consist of an electromagnetic lock and an armature plate. The electro-magnet is mounted to the doorframe and wired into a power supply and the armature plate is then mounted onto the door.

How do they work?

Several magnetised coil wires surround the metal plate within the maglock. When connected to a power supply, this creates an electromagnetic field that attracts the armature plate, this connection prohibits the door from opening.

As with most methods of access control, various ways of entry can be used including key card systems, push button releases, and digital locks.

Why use a maglock?

A standard maglock can withstand a large amount of force, ensuring your door remains secure against unauthorised access. With only two non-moving components maglocks are both easy to install and maintain.

What are integrated maglocks?

An integrated maglock is fully flush between the door and the frame giving it a great clean aesthetic and a variety of benefits. Very little maintenance is required and the fully flush design prevents damage or vandalism as the maglock isn’t visible from the outside of the doorset. The lack of a protrusion as with a standard maglock also prevents any injury or damage that could occur. Plus, as an integrated maglock arrives already installed to the doorset all the fitter needs to do is connect to the power source – allowing for easier and faster installation.

Will my property be secure?

The answer is yes. Standard and Integrated Maglocks come in different holding forces, suitable for the door they are installed on. To maintain the electromagnetic field, there has to be a constant power supply to the door, the maglock will not be operational without power. In the case of loss of power, a maglock is typically fail-safe, this ensures the door unlocks and allows for the safe egress of building occupants. This means a building is vulnerable if there is a power failure, it would be recommended in this case an additional locking device would also be installed to secure an unoccupied building.
