2 Trafalgar Way is a landmark mixed-use development in Tower Hamlets, London, located on the edge of Canary Wharf. Developed for Urbanest, the scheme brings together purpose-built student accommodation, residential apartments and commercial space within a highly sustainable, high-rise environment. The project has been widely recognised as one of Europe’s largest Passivhaus student accommodation schemes.

The Challenge

Delivering a development of this scale required every building component to support the project’s wider performance ambitions. Alongside stringent Passivhaus requirements, the site demanded dependable security, fire performance and durability across both internal and external applications. Metador supplied a tailored package of high-performance steel doorsets for 2 Trafalgar Way, combining security-rated and fire-rated solutions to suit the project’s varied internal and external requirements. The package included LPS 1175 B3 rated doorsets from the Xtreme range, alongside internal and external fire-rated doorsets from the Fireshield and FireshieldX ranges.

This mix of products enabled the project team to specify doorsets by location, risk profile, and performance requirements, while maintaining consistency in manufacture, quality, and technical support. Metador also worked to incorporate specific RAL colours across the doorset package, supporting wayfinding throughout the buildings and making it easier for occupants, staff, and visitors to identify key routes, zones, and access points. By supplying multiple doorset types from a single specialist manufacturer, Metador simplified coordination and provided confidence across security, fire protection, external durability, and visual integration needs.

To meet the client’s security requirements, the doorset was manufactured with heavy-duty 1.5mm galvanised steel door leaves, a heavy-duty 2mm galvanised steel frame and a large, high-security vision panel incorporated into the upper section of the door. The doorset was specified to PAS 24, the UK-recognised standard for enhanced security performance in residential applications, designed to resist opportunistic burglary attempts.

For added assurance, Metador’s security-rated steel doorsets are accredited by Secured by Design, the official police security initiative that promotes products tested to reduce crime and improve security.

Bespoke Design to Complement the Property

While security was a key project requirement, aesthetics were also important. To complement the traditional style of the property, the doorset was enhanced with a Victorian-inspired decorative groove pattern, creating a distinctive and refined residential appearance.

Powder-coated in-house to RAL 7032 Pebble Grey, the doorset perfectly matched the recently installed windows, whilst delivering a high-quality, durable finish suitable for external use.
